Overview

Siguiendo el orden establecido a posteriori por el propio autor, este ciclo recogerá todas las novelas de Elric agrupadas de dos en dos. Con esta serie nació el concepto de multiverso, por el cual sus personajes saltan de una novela a otra creando así una serie de relaciones cruzadas entre estas de más o menos complejidad.
El ciclo de Elric de Melniboné narra las aventuras y sobre todo las desventuras de Elric, 428º emperador de la isla-estado de Melniboné (que un día fue un imperio brillante que dominó el mundo, pero hoy está en clara decadencia) y Campeón Eterno, desde su llegada al trono hasta la destrucción del mundo.
Elric es un auténtico antihéroe, a diferencia de los típicos protagonistas de las novelas de fantasía. No es un personaje pobre criado en la batalla, es el emperador de lo que un día fue un imperio equiparable al romano; no es un bravo y musculoso guerrero, es un hechicero albino y anémico que necesita drogas para sobrevivir. No se casa con una princesa y vive feliz, pues su primer amor cae bajo su propia espada rúnica. Y sobre todo, no lucha por el bien, pues en este universo no existen simplemente el bien y el mal, si no caos, ley y equilibrio, fuerzas que están más allá de los conceptos humanos convencionales.
Con su inseparable compañero Moonglum, lucha contra dioses, viaja entre universos, invoca demonios y finalmente, coopera en el desequilibrio entre la ley y el caos y provoca la destrucción del mundo.
